Artist's Comments
This painting is watercolour on paper and is the eighth in the Venice series. This is the first one with people in it. I was really taken with this group resting in the sunshine at lunchtime, by the Grand Canal.
Thank you all for your kind comments, faves and watches. Most appreciated.
as always: very nice, very delicate and crisp. and new: with some people. this adds a new quality, leading the eye of the spectator to undertake a journey. from the gondolas to the reflections on water, to the people, to the doors and bars and their shadows, at last to the tree. and back to the boats. very nice. congratulations! very muted critique: i would have opted for darker shadows, esp. in background.
yes, i feel that deeper shadows of the people and the surroundings would have helped to create a more 3d feeling. if the depicted ambiance-light is stemming from a dull day then the shadows are correct. if it's a bright day then the shadows should be (esp. near the causation for it; i.e. directly besides the person) should be darker - gradually getting more bright. hmm, english isn't my first language; so it's hard to express what i mean... ok, another try. look at the male person with green shirt and dark-grey trousers. the shadow is uniformly grey, there's no hard shadow immediately besides the left leg and between the legs; and it should be there.... am i able to transport, what i want to say? only my opinion...
Here are darker shadows, trouble is, the photo of the painting does not show the subtleties. The shadow of the lady's left leg, with the green top and grey trousers is now there.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
A collection of the most beautiful and amazing square photographs I found among my favourites. Please have a look and give these artists the attention they deserve!

Where in the background would you opt for darker shadows? Do you mean the shadows the seated people are casting?
